Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho could allow David de Gea pursue his move to Real Madrid next summer, provided he can sign Raphael Varane in a part-exchange deal.

The Spain international is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the Premier League having been voted in the PFA Team of the Year for three consecutive seasons.

De Gea has started the new campaign in a similar fashion with eight clean sheets, but he was unable to stop Chelsea from scoring during the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

According to Don Balon, Mourinho could sanction De Gea’s switch to the European champions next summer, if Los Blancos are prepared to offer Varane as a makeweight in the proposed move.

Varane has not had the best of seasons with Zinedine Zidane’s side this term, but Mourinho is nevertheless keen on the Frenchman, whom he bought for Real Madrid from Lens in 2011.

De Gea currently has just over 18 months left on his United contract, and the club may have no option but to cash in on his services, should there be no breakthrough between now and the end of the season.

The 26-year-old graduate came close to joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2015, but the move was scuppered on deadline day after a faulty fax machine failed to deliver the necessary paperwork.
