Jose Mourinho speaks on ‘Phenomenal’ 29-year-old star amid transfer link

Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has refused to publicly state his interest in Alexis Sanchez, although he praised the Chilean as a ‘phenomenal player’ ahead of the Stoke City game. The 29-year-old is likely to leave Arsenal during the month with the north London club prepared to cash in on his signature than lose him for nothing in five months’ time.

Speaking ahead of the Stoke City game, Mourinho admitted that the Red Devils don’t always pursue players during the winter transfer window, but hinted that the club would jump at the opportunity of signing a top-class recruit at any period.

He told Sky Sports: “What we believe is there are some players in the football world where, if you have a chance to sign them, whether it is in January, March or July, then you have to try.

Meanwhile, when asked on the potential arrival of Sanchez this month, Mourinho refused to comment on the speculation, but hailed the winger as ‘phenomenal’ owing to his impressive progress in recent seasons at Arsenal.

He added: “In relation to Sanchez all I can say, which everyone else says, is that he is a phenomenal player. I feel I shouldn’t say much more than this.”

Manchester United are alleged to have stepped up their interest over the past 24 hours, and Mourinho is seemingly prepared to pay a fee of around £25m, though it still remains less than the £35m fee, Arsenal are said to demand.

Despite this, the United faithful could be partly confident of seeing Sanchez at Old Trafford with City deemed to be reluctant to pay more than £20m for a player, who could be available on a Bosman in the summer.
