Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly prepared to step up the club’s pursuit of Mesut Ozil in the New Year rather than waiting for his services until the summer. The Germany international has just seven months left on his Arsenal deal, and he has no plans of extending his stay beyond the 2017/18 season.
According to Don Balon, United could test the Gunners’ resolve in the January transfer window with Mourinho keen on a reunion with the World Cup winner. Initially, the Red Devils are said to have planned a Bosman move for Ozil in the summer, but Mourinho is now hoping to lure Ozil from the Emirates for a fee between £17m and £22m in January.
The Gunners currently face a similar situation with Alexis Sanchez, who has been linked with league leaders Manchester City, and they could potentially offload one of the pairing in order to cut their losses during the upcoming transfer window.
Ozil has produced mixed performances during the first-half of the current campaign, but his performances of late have vastly improved with three assists and one goal since the last international break.
Barring Jesse Lingard’s recent promise, United have not found the ideal player for the number 10 role with both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata struggling, and Ozil could be the perfect fit for the position with United chasing City for a long-awaited title.
The Germany international is also eligible to feature in the Champions League, and this would be an added bonus with Jose Mourinho’s men set to face stiffer opposition as they enter the knockout phase of the elite competition next year.
