Manchester United agree transfer deal for Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United have confirmed that they have secured a transfer agreement to bring Romelu Lukaku from Everton this summer. The Red Devils have fended off competition from Chelsea in order to pursue the Belgian, who bagged 25 Premier League goals last term.

Lukaku, 24, has been training with Paul Pogba in Los Angeles over the past couple of days, and this gave an early hint that he was angling towards an Old Trafford move – despite the strong interest from the Blues.

The Red Devils have now made it official that the player will link up with the club this summer after they finalised an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £90m. The statement read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed a fee with Everton for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku. The transfer is subject to a medical and personal terms.”

As per Sky Sport News, the Red Devils will part with an initial £75m fee for Lukaku with the additional sum likely to be settled as performance-based bonuses. Meanwhile, the report also suggests that Wayne Rooney could be offloaded as makeweight in the transfer agreement.

Rooney has made regular contact with Everton officials in recent weeks, and he looks set to make a Merseyside comeback in a deal which is likely to break the world transfer record. Pogba’s £89.3m transfer from Juventus remains the most expensive signing to date, and Lukaku appears set to eclipse the figure.

Lukaku will provide a much-needed upgrade to the United frontline which has been hit following the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The big Swede bagged 28 goals across all competitions last term, but his serious injury back in April influenced the Red Devils to release him on a free. Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata has also been linked with a switch to United, but the European champions continue to play hardball over the transfer value.
