Manchester United determined to agree deal with 22-year-old attacker

Martial MUFC

Manchester United are eager to extend the stay of Anthony Martial beyond June 2019 despite reports linking him with a possible departure from Old Trafford this summer.

Martial had been an influential player under Jose Mourinho for a significant part of the 2017/18 season but he was forced to drop down the pecking order following Alexis Sanchez’s mid-season arrival.

The Frenchman thereafter struggled to build up on his early season form and eventually ended the campaign with no goals and just a solitary assist between February and May.

Since then, there has been plenty of talk of Martial leaving United, but according to M.E.N, the club’s hierarchy remained determined to extend the attacker’s stay – possibly under the recommendation of Mourinho.

Despite the report, Martial’s position at Old Trafford is not entirely comfortable with the Frenchman literally the third-choice behind Sanchez and Marcus Rashford for the left-wing role.

Moreover, the likes of Marco Arnautovic and Mario Mandzukic have been associated with the club with Mourinho seeking to add more experience and Martial is unlikely to get an easy route into the first XI.

Regardless of this, Martial has age by his side and he could potentially have another impressive pre-season like the previous one where his performances won him over the Portuguese manager.
