Good news as Manchester United set to agree deal for £85,000-a-week favourite

Lingard Man Utd

According to The Sun, Manchester United are set to offer midfielder Jesse Lingard a new-and-improved contract as reward for his fine form this season. The 25-year-old has barely missed a game in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup or League Cup in 2017/18 and will extend his stay at Old Trafford past 2021.

Lingard has risen through youth ranks to the United first-team, making 127 appearances in all competitions since his debut in 2012, scoring and creating 38 goals. The England international, who has one goal in 10 games for his country, has been a regular in United’s starting lineup this season, racking up 43 games so far, contributing 20 goals.

He started in the Red Devils’ FA Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham on Saturday evening and has drawn praise from manager Jose Mourinho this season for his continued development. He said to Sky Sports in January: “I think Jesse is making that jump.

“He is being more consistent, he is adaptable, he understands better the game, he understands the different spaces and positions. I think he is going in a good direction.”

Lingard has stiff competition in the United squad for a starting place, with Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata all vying for playing time, but the 25-year-old’s earned his place on merit and isn’t going anywhere.

United are hoping to finish second in the Premier League table and win the FA Cup this season – after booking their place in the final on Saturday.
