Manchester United Transfer Window Fun

As with every other transfer window, Manchester United have been linked with almost every player under the sun. With the induction of Louis Van Gaal as manager, almost every Netherlands player who was with him at the World Cup this summer has been linked with a move to the club. Along with that, any player nurtured by Van Gaal at previous clubs had their names thrown into the mix. In his short spell at the club, we’ve seen that LVG is not gonna take any decision lightly.

After approving the Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera deals, we’ve seen him bide his time and get to know the players available to him before delving further into the transfer market, if at all. LVG knows the type of player that he requires and probably knows the exact players that he wants.

With two weeks to go until the season gets under way, the media are wasting their time linking United with some players and a being a little bit naive. Everyone has been acknowledging the tactical prowess of Van Gaal and his attention to detail in such things as positioning. Because of this, he can’t just hit and hope in the transfer window.

As I’m writing this, the Vermaelen deal has fallen through because Arsenal, reportedly wanted Chris Smalling as part of a trade but Utd were unwilling to accept these terms. Vermaelen although out of form, would’ve been a very clever signing and for good value. He is 28 years old and would have brought that bit of extra experience to the side. Also, having been at Ajax for nine years, he would fit in easily to LVG’s game plan. Vermaelen has now completed a move to FC Barcelona.

As the transfer window progresses, I suggest you ignore the club being linked with too many attacking players. I think it is more likely that Van Gaal will try and find an additional central defender, possibly Blind. Another unlikely, but suitable, deal for United is a short term offer for the out of place Xabi Alonso. With Kroos, Modric and Khedira set to be ahead of him in the Real Madrid pecking order, not to mention their star studded front four, Alonso might suit Van Gaal’s midfield. There is no doubting his ball retention ability.

  1. Until the beginning of the Premier League missing a week and we have essentially no major reinforcements. United’s management is a tragedy after leaving Ferguson and Gill. Still, I believe that will come Hummels, Vidal and Di Maria. Otherwise, City and Chelsea for whom show they have only United is behind in everything!
