Phil Neville heaps praise on two key Manchester United players

Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Phil Neville has heaped praise on the central midfield duo of Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini after their impressive performance in the 1-0 win over Southampton last weekend.

The Red Devils have kept six clean sheets across all competitions this term, and Neville was particularly pleased with the display at St.Mary’s where Fellaini put in another strong performance alongside Matic.

In the absence of Paul Pogba, the Belgian has stepped into the starting lineup ahead of former first-choice Ander Herrera, and Neville feels the midfield combination suits perfectly for United’s forward-minded players.

“Alongside Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini has probably played his two best games in a United shirt and to be keeping a top player like Ander Herrera out really says something,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s a great foundation for the side and even though they were under pressure against Southampton they never really looked like they were in trouble.

“The players look like they know what they are doing and are happy to invite teams on to them with the counter-attacking pace of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku.”

Fellaini suffered a minor ankle injury following a heavy challenge from Southampton’s Shane Long, and this has ruled him out of Wednesday’s Champions League outing against CSKA Moscow at the VEB Arena.

As a result, Herrera is expected to take up the central midfield duties alongside Matic with Michael Carrick also not part of the travelling party with an injury – confirmed by Jose Mourinho in his pre-match press conference.
