Manchester United are considering the prospect of offering Anthony Martial in a proposed swap deal for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic. The France international has had a strong start to the season at Old Trafford, contributing five goals and assisting a further five in all competitions.
According to Diario Gol, the Red Devils could sanction Martial’s move to the Camp Nou, if they receive Rakitic in the proposed exchange deal. Martial has been a consistent performer off the bench this term, but he has yet to convince Jose Mourinho to start him on a regular basis in the Premier League.
Rakitic, now 29, has the ability to play as a central midfielder or in a slightly advanced role, and this appears to have attracted United’s interest owing to the injuries in the early part of the campaign. The likes of Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini are on the sidelines for United this term, although the former has returned to light training following his hamstring injury.
Martial has been a regular substitute behind Marcus Rashford for the league outings this season, but he has still been effective with three goals and two assists off the bench. Martial currently remains a more effective backup to Jesse Lingard in reserve, and it does not make sense offloading the Frenchman, unless Jose Mourinho wants a player with more tactical awareness.
