Rojo and Herrera start, 3-4-1-2: Alternate Man United line up vs Basel

Manchester United will look to cement top spot in their Champions League group when they face off against Basel at St Jakob Park on Wednesday night. The Red Devils are virtually assured of their position in the last-16 of the competition, and Jose Mourinho could ring in the changes ahead of a tight schedule ahead.

Formation: 3-4-1-2

Lineup:

David de Gea has been the first-choice for this season’s European campaign, and the Spaniard is likely to keep his place in goal against the Swiss giants.

With three at the back, Victor Lindelof, and Chris Smalling could be accompanied by Marcos Rojo, who was on the bench during last weekend’s Premier League triumph over Newcastle United.

Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are certain candidates to be rested for the game, and this provides opportunities for Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind in the wing-back positions – both of whom have been regularly linked with moves away from Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba made his injury after a long injury lay-off on Saturday, and Mourinho could opt to start him on the bench alongside Nemanja Matic, who has been one of United’s ever-presents in the Premier League.

As a result, Marouane Fellaini could partner Ander Herrera at the heart of the midfield with the Belgian having only made a couple of substitute appearances since his comeback from a knee injury.

Juan Mata was picked in the number 10 role versus Newcastle last weekend, and the Spaniard could keep his spot in midweek amid reports that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is struggling with his fitness.

Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku shined together in a two-striker partnership versus CSKA Moscow earlier last month, and Mourinho could opt for a similar combination versus the Swiss champions.
