Manchester United have to reinforce their backline after a dismal campaign last term in which they conceded 57 goals in the Premier League.
As per today’s version of Corriere dello Sport (press image provided below), talks between Juventus and Matthijs de Ligt have broken down and the center half has asked to be sold in the summer.

In such a scenario, the Italian source have mentioned that Man United and Chelsea are favorites and they are ready to move to sign the Dutch international from the Old Lady.
The 22-year-old defender’s current contract with the Bianconeri has a release clause worth 115 million euros and CdS claim that he wanted the exit clause to be around 80 million euros in the new deal. However, Juventus do not want that.
De Ligt is currently the highest-paid player at the club earning around £200,000 a week (after bonuses) and the Italian giants, keeping in view the economic situation, offered to reduce the total bonus. Obviously, the player turned the offer down, and now, he wants to leave.
Matthijs rose to stardom under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and as per Corriere dello Sport, the Dutch coach is pushing the Red Devils to reunite with his compatriot at Old Trafford.
On the other hand, Chelsea are looking to adequately reinforce the squad under new owners and want the Netherlands international to strengthen the backline.
Manchester United cannot offer Champions League football but the presence of Ten Hag could help them secure the signing of De Ligt. It is reported that a fee of 80-90 million euros might be enough to hire his services from Juve.
