James Rodriguez could secure Manchester United move on one condition – report

Real Madrid star James Rodriguez is on the verge of a move to Manchester United, as he has reportedly agreed a deal with the Red Devils, The Sun via RCN Radio claims. The attacker has been linked with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal. However, Manchester United have been at the forefront for his signature, as the club seek an alternative to forward duo Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The club’s interest in the forward has far exceeded the interests shown by the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.

Rodriguez is extremely aware that his next move will be critical in his career, as he has already spent much of the Real Madrid days on the bench. Despite having signed from Monaco for £71 million, he has never enjoyed the same status as a Cristiano Ronaldo or even Gareth Bale. This season, he has largely been on the fringes of the starting line-up. Even though he has been getting much more game time off late, it is only due to manager Zinedine Zidane deciding to rest players like Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

The Colombian continues to be an afterthought in this Madrid team. However, his move to Old Trafford seems to depend heavily on the presence of Wayne Rooney. If the England captain decides to leave United, it will act as the green light for Rodriguez to come to Old Trafford. Furthermore, the Number 10 jersey has already been lined up for Rodriguez. Antoine Griezmann is a player heavily linked with a move to United just like Rodriguez. However, he prefers the iconic No 7 jersey.

Rodriguez will be comparatively cheaper than Griezmann. The 25-year-old, who currently earns £120,000 a week, is expected to cost around £60 million whereas the Atletico Madrid star will not be available for anything less than £85 million. Yet, Manchester United ideally need two new forwards with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also expected to be on the way out following the serious injury.

A lot will also hinge upon Manchester United winning the Europa League, as it would determine their participation in the Champions League next season. This could also hold the key to the arrival of players like Rodriguez.
