United’s pursuit of a defender doesn’t seem to be limited to big money signings if the latest reports are to be believed. Louis Van Gaal has always be a fan of giving youngsters a chance and now it seems he’s given the green light for the club to sign a youngster from closer to home than the likes of Sergio Ramos.
The Metro notes: Barnsley defender Mason Holgate has started training with Manchester United ahead of an expected move to the club, according to reports.
United have been linked with the brilliant 19-year-old in recent weeks, with Red Devils scouts having followed him closely.
And now reports say Holgate arrived at United’s training ground this week to train with the club ahead of a transfer to Old Trafford.
United are yet to agree a fee with Barnsley for his services, but they are resigned to him signing for another club.
The youngster is reportedly available for around the £1 million mark which certainly wouldn’t damage Van Gaal’s transfer budget too much, the only question being would he get anywhere near the first team? As Paddy McNair showed last season, age doesn’t bother Van Gaal and investing in Holgate may be a gamble with a lot of reward and very little risk.
