ESPN FC Pundit Steve Nicol does not believe Manchester United can secure the signature of Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos during the summer. Jose Mourinho is expected to make midfield changes in the next transfer window amid Michael Carrick’s retirement and Marouane Fellaini’s potential departure from Old Trafford.
A recent report suggested that Jose Mourinho could revive United’s long-term interest in the World Cup winner as he seeks to find a suitable replacement for the club’s captain in the summer. However, speaking on ESPN, Nicol was adamant that Los Blancos would consider allowing the German to move.
“He would enhance anybody. I just don’t see it happening (to Man United). I think Real Madrid right now do need to make changes but I don’t see it being in the middle of the park with Toni Kroos. I think Toni Kroos absolutely is cemented at Real Madrid right now. So this 100 per cent for me is a stay,” he said.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is planning a potential overhaul of the Real Madrid squad in the summer, and some notable names including Isco, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and the unpopular Karim Benzema have been associated with potential exits.
The £325,000-per-week star has been another candidate touted for a possible departure, but it would come as a huge surprise, if they are to part ways with the 28-year-old, who has been their best performing player from the centre of the park – in terms of an attacking sense. Kroos has contributed four goals and five assists for Real Madrid across all competitions this term.
