£60,000-a-week defender set to join club after three years at the Theatre of Dreams: report

Darmian MUFC

Calcio Mercato journalist Nicolo Schira has dropped a hint that Matteo Darmian could make a return to the Serie A at the end of the season. The Italy international had impressed under Jose Mourinho during the backend of the previous campaign, but he has not been able to replicate the success this term. Il Bianconero claims the 28-year-old is set to join Juventus after three years at the Old Trafford.

Darmian started the campaign as the second-choice for the full-back positions. However, as the season has gone on, the likes of Ashley Young and Luke Shaw have established themselves ahead of him, and the Italian is more or less deemed surplus to requirements – with his only start of 2018 coming against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup.

In a recent tweet by Schira, The £60,000-a-week defender was spotted doing shopping alongside his partner in Italy, and he happened to put a smile on his face when a couple of Juventus supporters invited him back to Turin.

Schira Tweeted: “Milan Shopping day for Matteo #Darmian. In summer the farewell and return to Italy is looming #ManchesterUnited, with the #Juventus [in] pole [position]. To the fans who today have come across him, inviting him in black [and white] and the defender responded with a smile.”

A return to his homeland would suit Darmian, who has struggled with the offensive side of his game at Old Trafford. Alongside him, Blind is also on the fringes of the first-team, and the pair are likely to be sold when the transfer window reopens in July.

The Old Lady are planning a potential overhaul of their defence during the summer with full-backs Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah likely to leave on Bosman transfers, whilst the future of central defensive duo Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini also remain in question with negotiations still going on.
