‘Not debate here’, ‘He’s a dangerous force’ – £76.5m striker demanded by Manchester United fans

Paulo Dybala

After reports suggested Manchester United could be signing one of Antoine Griezmann, Gareth Bale or Paulo Dybala, supporters have warmed to the idea of one world class striker coming to Old Trafford this month.

Dybala, who has scored and created 81 goals for Juventus since his 2015 move from Palermo, is the one fans want the most. The 24-year-old has been prolific for the Old Lady this season, boasting 17 goals and four assists in all competitions, but his asking price is believed to be  in excess of £76.5m.

Manchester United may have to break their transfer record to sign the Argentina, which is currently held by £94.5m midfielder Paul Pogba, who left Juventus for a return to Old Trafford. Dybala doesn’t appear in a rush to leave the club, but the excessive interest in his signature could see him consider a bid.

Manager Jose Mourinho does have an abundance of strikers, with Romelu Lukaku having joined in the summer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic back at the club and recovering from injury, Marcus Rashford always a threat with his pace, and Anthony Martial capable of playing centre-forward. But the goals have dried up of late, which is forcing his hand to seek somebody else who is prolific.

Dybala fits the bill perfectly, but his asking price might be a tumbling block. United have spent £150m on three players this season and £166.5m on three players last season. The club may not sanction another marquee signing unless deemed absolutely necessary, with big January deals notoriously hard to broker.

That won’t stop the fans begging the club to sign him, however.
