Manchester United favourite Andy Cole believes his former club would be making a ‘major signing’, should they pursue the services of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this month. The Chile international has just over five months remaining on his existing deal, and manager Arsene Wenger has recently admitted that the attacker is unlikely to pen an extension.
Over the past 48 hours, United are reported to have made a £25m offer for the Chilean, though it remains below the Gunners’ current valuation of £35m. Despite this, Jose Mourinho’s side remain front-runners with arch-rivals Manchester City reluctant to pay anything more than £20m for the former Barcelona man.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast, Cole talked up United’s chances of signing the 29-year-old, and feels the attacker would be a ‘major signing’ midway through the season, he said: “If Manchester United bought Sanchez it would be a major-major signing.
“We all know what he did at Arsenal, Barcelona and before that Udinese. We appreciate what a good player he is. He’ll have the choice of a lot of clubs and, if United could get him, it would be a massive signing.”
Sanchez played as only a second-half substitute during the Gunners’ League Cup semi-final versus Chelsea, and this probably gives a hint that Wenger sees his future elsewhere before the end of the month.
Manchester United are heavily stocked with players, who can feature on the left side of the attack, but the workrate of Sanchez on the playing field is something which Mourinho would surely love in his side, which struggled to be ruthless in front of goal during the festive period.
