Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has dropped a possible hint that he could join Fred at Manchester United this summer. Fred became United’s first signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week and the Brazilian is widely expected to take the position of Michael Carrick, who retired at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Despite this, Mourinho is understood to be eyeing another midfielder this summer with Marouane Fellaini on the cusp of leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer.
As such, Lazio’s Milinkovic-Savic has been earmarked as the manager’s prime target and he has recently been seen interacting with United’s official Instagram account.
Milinkovic-Savic has been a player who has been watched on multiple occasions by United scouts but the club are yet to make a formal offer for his signature.
As per reports, United could be prepared to offer as much as £80m for Milinkovic-Savic but this would still remain below Lazio’s valuation which is currently set at £132m.
In this case, Mourinho could lean towards signing Marco Verratti from Paris Saint-Germain instead with United said to have previously failed with an approach for the Italian last summer.
