Man Utd had a torrid time dealing with injuries in central defence last season. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez missed out on major chunks of the season whilst Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof also suffered from issues of their own.
Erik ten Hag had to call upon Willy Kambwala from the academy and sometimes even use Casemiro as a center back to manage.

The situation made it very clear that the Red Devils needed to sign at least two central defenders going into the new season, especially with the exit of Varane.
We covered a story from journalist Nick Semeraro who claimed that Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt was ‘locked and loaded’ to join Man Utd.
The journalist mentioned that the Red Devils had agreed a deal worth £42m with the German giants, a fee set to be paid in instalments.
However, reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has offered the an update on the situation and revealed that a deal has “not yet” been agreed upon between the two clubs who continue to be in negotiations.
Romano did mention that Man Utd have an agreement with the player. Here is what he had to say on his show:
“Manchester United keep working on the deal for Matthijs de Ligt, it’s a separate story [to Lille starlet Leny Yoro]. Manchester United are still in conversations and still in negotiation for Matthijs de Ligt with Bayern. [There’s an] agreement with the player, but still in negotiation with Bayern.”
Romano revealed in a separate update on X that Man Utd have booked medicals for yet another centre-back target, Leny Yoro. This however, is a separate deal and will not affect the Red Devils’ pursuit of De Ligt.
Despite being just 24, De Ligt already has a wealth of experience under his belt, having already played for Serie A giants Juventus and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
He captained Ajax back when he was just 19 years old in their fairytale run to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League five years ago. Having already worked with Erik ten Hag, adaptation shouldn’t be an issue at Man Utd.
The Dutch star’s career has somewhat fallen off in recent seasons but he still continues to be one of the most promising centre-backs on the planet and is entering his peak years.
For a change, Man Utd seem to be making the right noises in the transfer market and if they can wrap up both the De Ligt and Yoro deals, exciting times lie ahead for the club.
