France international Anthony Martial has decided against pursuing a fresh challenge away from Old Trafford after receiving a vote of confidence from the club’s board.
Martial had looked off-colour for United since the January arrival of Alexis Sanchez and he managed to contribute just one assist between the months of February and May.
With the new campaign, Martial got his chance to impress against Brighton & Hove Albion but another average performance meant that he had come in the firing line of Jose Mourinho.
A recent report suggested that Mourinho would be willing to sanction Martial’s exit before the end of the month but the Portuguese’s plan was instantly rebuffed by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
As such, Martial appears to have been pleased with the support received from above and he has now decided against pushing through an exit before the transfer window closes across Europe.
There has been plenty of tension surrounding Mourinho and Martial in recent weeks and this has largely come about from the latter going AWOL during the birth of his child in pre-season for which he has been fined.
Martial lasted only an hour of the shock 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend and given his shrewd relationship with the manager, it would not come as a surprise, if Marcus Rashford or Jesse Lingard get the nod ahead of him.
