Arsenal legend: This Ligue 1 midfielder could join Man United in January

Former Arsenal star Robert Pires feels Manchester United could pursue the services of Fabinho during the January transfer window. The Brazil international is currently in the ranks of AS Monaco, where he has shone in the holding midfield position.

Fabinho was associated with an Old Trafford move during the early stages of the summer transfer window, but ultimately United pursued the signature of Nemanja Matic, who has proved an instant success under Jose Mourinho.

Speaking to Bwin, the Gunners legend suggested that Fabinho could seal a move to Old Trafford between January and the start of next season, he said h/t Metro: ‘I think this could happen in January, or next summer.”

Cross-town rivals Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in the versatile midfielder, but Pires believes Pep Guardiola will start with Fernandinho, who has had a strong start to the campaign, he added: “Manchester City could also be interested but they’ve got Fernandinho at the moment, who is playing very well.”

United started the campaign with plenty of midfield depth with the likes of Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick present to provide backup to Matic and Paul Pogba.

However, injuries have hampered Pogba, Carrick and Fellaini one-by-one, and Mourinho currently has to contend with just two senior midfielders in Herrera and Matic for the first-team duties.

Fabinho has been one on Mourinho’s radar over the past 15 months, and it will be interesting to see whether Manchester United express an interest in the former Rio Ave man – with Fellaini and Herrera are approaching the final months of their respective contracts.
