Manchester United could miss out on Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil should Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang complete his move to the Emirates. Bild say the German international will sign a new deal with the Gunners upon the signing of Aubameyang, which is bad news for United.
Jose Mourinho has long been keen on the out-of-contract midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013. Ozil signed a five-year-deal, worth £7m-per-annum (£137k-per-week) with the Gunners at the time of his £42.4m transfer, and still hadn’t agreed an extension with only months remaining.
However, it appears he’s willing to commit if Arsenal bolster their attacking options with the Gabon international, who has scored 141 goals in 213 games for Dortmund. Manchester United had been heavily linked with Ozil weeks previous, with reports suggesting the German would move to Old Trafford for free in the summer.
Nevertheless, it’s good news for Arsenal but bad news for United. Ozil is one of the best playmakers in the world, and the chance to sign such a talent on a free transfer could have been a game-changer.
United will no doubt be still delighted to land Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal on a swap deal this month, but Ozil’s creativity could have given the Red Devils’ strong attack real ammunition.
