Manchester United have been dealt a blow as Barcelona have agreed a deal for Clement Lenglet. The 23-year-old, who was linked with the Red Devils this summer, has made the move from Sevilla after racking up 73 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish outfit.
United manager Jose Mourinho has been in the market for a centre-back ahead of the new season, with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld on the wishlist. Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo could be on their way out of Old Trafford, so replacements had been identified. One of them won’t be Lenglet, however.
The French u21 international will join up with countryman Umtiti, Gerard Pique, Yerry Mina and Thomas Vermaelen ahead of next season. Umtiti and Pique have formed a formidable defensive partnership at the Camp Nou, but Lenglet will surely be third in the pecking order under Ernesto Valverde.
As for United, the Red Devils will be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere. They’re overstocked with options currently but may have a need to strengthen if Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind leave this summer.
