Bad news for Manchester United as PSG could agree £35m deal for defender

According to Le Parisien, AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci wants to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer. It’s bad news for Manchester United, with the Red Devils interested in bringing the ball-playing centre-back to Old Trafford.

Manager Jose Mourinho has been in the market for a defender as Daley Blind has re-joined Ajax while outcast Marcos Rojo has an uncertain future. Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), Samuel Umtiti (Barcelona) and Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham) were on his wishlist, but now it appears he wants Bonucci.

Unfortunately, the 31-year-old looks more likely to join PSG than United. Bonucci’s agent Alessandro Lucci reportedly met with director of sport Antero Henrique to discuss a potential £35m deal, with talks said to be at an advanced stage.

He’s only spent a year at Milan, but the club’s failure to stay in line with Financial Fair Player regulations could be forcing him out of the club as one of the highest-earners.

The Red Devils have made three signings this summer – Diogo Dalot from FC Porto, Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk and Lee Grant from Stoke City – but they were expected to conclude a lot more business before the transfer window shuts.

With Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof have been inconsistent last season, United barely have a defender they can trust over the course of a season. Even Eric Bailly lost his place in the starting lineup for a period in 2017/18. However, their prime target Bonucci could be going elsewhere.
