£22m-rated Man Utd midfielder prepares his return to Spanish league after a call from Ernesto Valverde

According to El Gol Digital, the Manchester United midfielder prepares his return to La Liga after a call from Ernesto Valverde. The Spanish international has an uncertain future at Old Trafford due to a lack of playing time and could be on the move as his deal expires next year.

Herrera joined United from Athletic Bilbao in 2014 and has gone on to make 158 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 41 goals. During his time at Bilbao, he played under now-Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde which is likely where El Gol Digital’s link has come from.

The 28-year-old has struggled for playing time this season, racking up just 12 Premier League starts under Jose Mourinho, and nears the last year of his deal. With Herrera behind Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in the midfield pecking order, a move could be on the cards.

If Barcelona did lodge a £22m bid for his signature, it’s hard to see Herrera turning the Catalans down. He could be somewhat of a replacement for the departing Andres Iniesta, but game time may be hard to come by at the Camp Nou, with Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho being his competition.
