Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Ander Herrera has been sidelined for this weekend’s Premier League clash versus Chelsea. The Spain international suffered a hamstring problem just 15 minutes into his Champions League appearance versus Sevilla in midweek.
Speaking ahead of the Blues’ game, the manager admitted that the club have yet to determine the severity of the injury, but he expects the midfielder out for a ‘few weeks’ which could potentially keep him out of action until April.
“Ander is out. I don’t know the final diagnosis but I know he’ll be out for a few weeks. I don’t know how many is a few – two, three, four, five, six weeks – I don’t know, but a few weeks, for sure. Coming back from injury – nobody else,” he is quoted on the club’s official website.
Aside from this, there was positive update on the injury front which suggests that United will have to cope without the presence of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo at the back whilst Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind are the others unavailable for the game.
With both Herrera and Fellaini sidelined, Pogba have a more prominent role to play at the heart of the United midfield. The Frenchman has lacked the intensity possessed during the early phase of the campaign, but with the club entering a crucial phase, he needs to step up to the plate with a standout performance versus Chelsea this weekend.
Only four points separate Manchester United and fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table, and they cannot afford any slip-ups, though Chelsea have tended to share the spoils in recent trips to Old Trafford. United have picked up just one victory in their previous five meetings versus Chelsea at the stadium.
