Blow for Manchester United as target agrees deal to join Inter Milan: report

According to Corriere dello Sport, Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij has agreed to join Inter Milan on a free transfer at the end of the season. The 26-year-old was out of contract in the summer, leading to interest from Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, but his future appears to have been decided.

It’s a blow for United as manager Jose Mourinho has been keen to strengthen his defensive options. The futures of Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo are unknown, while new-boy Victor Lindelof has been inconsistent since his summer move from Benfica.

De Vrij would have been the ideal candidate to bolster their defensive options and wouldn’t have cost a penny. However, Inter look to have won the race for his signature, meaning the Netherlands international will be staying in the Serie A.

Joining Lazio from Feyenoord in 2014, de Vrij went on to make over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Italian outfit. He was highly experienced and highly rated, but United, Arsenal and Liverpool will now have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

The report from Corriere dello Sport also claimed Juventus left-back Kwadwo Asamoah has followed the centre-back to the San Siro.
