£70m star has £8.3m-a-year agreement with Man Utd and has made his stance clear

One of the first names that Man Utd tried to sign this transfer window was Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite but the two clubs were not able to agree on the valuation. Since then, the club have signed other targets like Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.

Everton set a price tag of around £70m for the talented centre-back, something that the Red Devils did not agree on. The player, on his part, had agreed to a £8.3m-a-year salary that he would earn should he move to Old Trafford.

Having singed Yoro from LOSC Lille, Man Utd are under no pressure to meet Everton’s asking price and things have gone cold on a negotiation front.

According to the Daily Mail, the Toffees are looking to take advantage of the situation and tie Branthwaite down to a new deal.

The Merseyside club have already sold Amadou Onana to Aston Villa and is under no pressure to sell to meet financial fair play demands. Tying down Branthwaite to a new deal will really give them better bargaining chips on the negotiation table.

However, the 22-year-old Englishman is in no mood to entertain the contract from Everton considering the interest in him. Unless the Merseyside club make an effort to sign him by matching Man Utd’s wages, an extension is off the table.

This is a clear indication that Branthwaite is still hoping to join Man Utd by the end of the summer. By his defiance to sign a new contract, the one-cap Englishman has made it clear that he sees his future away from Everton and has forced their hand into a decision.

The longer Everton resist selling Branthwaite, the lesser his valuation could be in subsequent transfer windows. Man Utd need to be ready with a new offer, should the PL club change their mind and lower its asking price.

Man Utd have shown a sense of understanding in the transfer market that has been missing in previous years. Branthwaite promised to be an interesting saga and only time will tell how this pans out.
