Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is seriously considering a move to Old Trafford amid the uncertainty over his future under Zinedine Zidane. The France international became the youngest ever player to claim three Champions League medals following Los Blancos’ triumph over Juventus last week.
Spanish publication Don Balon cites that the 24-year-old would prefer a switch to Manchester United this summer with the European champions on the search for a new central defender. Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci and Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi are among the top names on the Los Blancos shortlist, and a move for either could see Varane drop down the pecking order at the Bernabeu.
Varane shared a fond relationship with Jose Mourinho, who recruited him from Lens back in the summer of 2011, and a reunion looks on the cards this summer with the Frenchman fearful over his position at Madrid. The Special One struggled to find a suitable combination at the heart of the defence last term owing to injuries, and he is understood to have earmarked Varane as his top defensive target for the summer transfer window.
With the World Cup coming along next year, Varane would want regular first-team action, and this is something that Mourinho would be willing to offer to his ex-player. Varane managed 38 outings for Real Madrid during their previous campaign as they clinched their first La Liga title since the 2011-12 season. The Spanish giants also became the first club to retain the Champions League crown after they thumped Juventus by a 4-1 scoreline last Sunday.
