Club legend: ‘Powerful’ midfielder will inspire Man Utd to Premier League title

Manchester United legend Denis Erwin feels Paul Pogba will be the driving force for Manchester United as they seek to end their four-year wait for the English crown. The France international rejoined the Red Devils from Juventus for a club-record £89m fee last summer and he has since become a regular at the heart of the midfield.

Pogba had his critics during the previous campaign due to his world-record price tag – which has been eclipsed by Neymar, but he still managed to contribute nine goals and six assists across all competitions. With Nemanja Matic having been brought to the United setup, Pogba is likely to earn a free role this season, and Erwin has backed the Frenchman to make a huge impression.

“I expect Manchester United to challenge for the title. More consistency is needed. We drew too many [last season] and I think more goals are needed from different areas,” he said, speaking on behalf on Marathonbet, h/t The Mirror.

“Last season there was an over-reliance on Zlatan. Rashford, I think, will score more goals. I expect Paul Pogba to be a really powerful player this year. Lindelof will take a bit of time but will turn into a very good player. Lukaku and Matic are good additions. Matic is a really experienced, solid performer.”

Pogba notched the opening goal in the 2-0 Europa League triumph over Ajax in the final last month, and he will have his sights on making a similar impression when United take on Real Madrid in the European Super Cup next week.

Jose Mourinho had tried out several formations during the club’s pre-season tour, but it is widely predicted that he would stick with the three-at-the-back setup ahead of their new Premier League season, which starts with a home game against West Ham United on August 13.
