The 2016-17 season marked Manchester United’s return as a title winning team once again, as we managed to lift the Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield in one season. Even though we finished outside the top four in terms of league positions, United were able to return to the Champions League by virtue of winning the Europa League. Club legend Gary Pallister feels that this success has increased jealousy amongst rivals – like Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
While the Premier League is the bread and butter of our football season, the ultimate objective of a football team is to win trophies – and we have more than satisfied fans on this regard. Pallister says that the three trophies are a sign of United coming back to their old self. Speaking to Manchester United’s official site, Pallister said:
“Winning three trophies was fantastic in itself. It means so much to the club, not just financially but for the fans and players who want to be involved in the biggest competition in the world.”
He also sees a lot of positives for the upcoming 2017-18 season, as Jose Mourinho strengthens the squad in several areas of the pitch. There are departures expected from Old Trafford, but they would be only to prune the squad and make it much more efficient. The transfer of Victor Lindelof for £31 million from Benfica may be the start of significant transfer activity in the next couple of weeks. As a top centre-back himself, Pallister is happy to see that Mourinho is concentrating on strengthening the defence – even after managing to achieve the second best defensive record in the division last season. He continued:
“Jose has always had his teams that know how to defend properly and it’s great that we’ve got that but we have also got the ability to score goals as well, although maybe not as many as we’d like at Old Trafford last season.
“However, I think that is an area the team will look to address next season.”
Manchester United legends will be hosting Barcelona legends at Old Trafford in September. The first meeting will be held at the Camp Nou on June 30.Pallister will not be able to feature in both these games, but United fans can be sure that he will be cheering for the team from any corner of the globe.
