Club legend: This star will be crucial to United’s Premier League challenge

Manchester United legend Ryan Gibbs expects Paul Pogba to improve on his performances from his previous season. The Frenchman returned to Old Trafford from Juventus for a club-record fee of £89m last summer but he struggled to adapt to a deeper midfield position.

The Red Devils have signed Nemanja Matic to add more steel to the heart of the midfield this season, and Giggs believes that the Serbian’s presence would allow Pogba express himself in a freer role.

“I expect Pogba will improve a lot this season,” he said at the FA and McDonald’s Community Awards h/t ESPN. “He’s been back a year now and the introduction of Matic is a good buy because it frees him up. That’s what you want to see from Pogba, getting on the end of crosses and scoring goals.”

Pogba managed just nine goals across all competitions last season with the woodwork being his enemy, and Giggs expects him to improve on his scoring record in order to propel United towards the title.

He added: “He managed nine last year and hit the crossbar and post plenty of times as well, so he can bring the goals that might turn draws into wins and have a real effect on the team.”

The Red Devils finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last season with 69 points, but Giggs predicts that his former club will have a crack at the title alongside rivals Manchester City, while champions Chelsea cannot be disregarded due to their efforts last term.

Prior to the new league season, the focus will be on the European Super Cup on Tuesday night with Mourinho looking to get a win over former club Real Madrid to guide United to their second triumph in the competition.
