Manchester United favourite Paul Scholes believes the club could have a tough time during the summer with Real Madrid likely to revive their long-term interest in Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea. The European champions are deemed to be planning a fresh approach for the 27-year-old as they seek to overcome their failure to perform efficiently at the domestic stage this term.
In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, Scholes admits United could find themselves in a difficult situation to keep De Gea amid Los Blancos’ interest. Nevertheless, the 43-year-old would like the club’c hierarchy make their best efforts in order to prolong the Spaniard’s stay for a longer period, he said: “It has to be, but I think it will be difficult to do that if Real Madrid want him.
“He’s obviously showing he’s the best goalkeeper in the world and if Madrid want him you can understand David wanting to go there, as much as we don’t want him to. We can understand he’s from Madrid and would be playing for a team that would be challenging for the Champions League season after season.”
De Gea nearly sealed his dream move to the Bernabeu three years ago, but a faulty fax machine ensured that his fate remained with Manchester United, where he has transformed into unquestionably the world’s best shot-stopper. United boss Jose Mourinho has already stressed that the club should keep hold of their influential players in order to attain trophy success, and it appears that De Gea is more close to inking an extension than ever. The Spaniard is presently contracted at Old Trafford until the summer of 2019.
