Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has reportedly given Nemanja Matic the green light to join Manchester United, provided his £50m valuation is met this summer. The Serbian midfielder has been left out of the Blues’ pre-season tour of China and Singapore in order to pursue a fresh challenge elsewhere.
According to The Sun, Matic could realise his reunion with Jose Mourinho this summer after Abramovich personally intervened to discuss the player’s transfer to Old Trafford. Matic played a key role in the Blues’ Premier League triumphs in 2015 and 2017, and the Russian magnate is willing to sell him to United as a gift for his contribution.
Jose Mourinho has been on the search for a new enforcer since the end of last season, and The Sun suggests that the Red Devils have already failed with a £35m approach for Matic last month.
Matic shared a good relationship with Mourinho in west London, but there was one instance where he was substituted despite coming on as a second-half substitute against Southampton in 2015. The Serb handled the situation without much fuss, and this showed his respect for the manager when things were not going well at the Bridge.
The 28-year-old has emerged as one of the most consistent performers at the centre of the park, and he could emerge as the perfect partner alongside Ander Herrera with Michael Carrick no longer having the legs to run the Red Devils midfield. £50m would present a huge outlay for a player approaching his 29th birthday, but Mourinho would still take his experience in order to guide United to the Premier League title next term.
