Confirmed: Manchester United without two key defenders for Basel clash

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club won’t have the services of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly during Wednesday’s Champions League outing versus FC Basel. The pair suffered injuries during the international break, and this saw them miss the Premier League triumph over Newcastle United last weekend.

In the lead-up to the Basel game, Mourinho revealed that Bailly is unlikely to feature against the Swiss champions, but he could make the squad during Saturday’s league game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese tactician confirmed that Jones is certain to miss the Brighton clash on Saturday after having failed to make progress from a thigh injury, he aggravated on international duty with England.

“Bailly I think has a chance for the weekend. Jones does not play tomorrow and I can say in advance he doesn’t play the weekend too,” he told reporters, as per The Manchester Evening News.

Manchester United are currently on 12 points after four Champions League games in Group A, and a point over Basel would assure them top spot in the group with an extra game to play.

With the congestive schedule ahead, Mourinho is likely to have to rotate his options, and the recent injury comeback of Marcos Rojo would surely provide the additional depth required at the heart of the defence.
