Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was keen on a return to Manchester United this summer, but the move was scuppered by the father of Monaco ace Kylian Mbappe, Sunday Times reports.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has sought a move back to the Premier League following accusations of tax fraud worth £13m for which he has undergone a hearing.
As per Times, Ronaldo could have had a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, had Los Blancos pursued the services of French wonderkid Mbappe.
Mbappe had revealed his admiration for idol Zinedine Zidane earlier in the summer, but ultimately his dad wanted him to join Paris Saint-Germain which would help his career development.
The European champions nevertheless planned a last-ditch attempt to sign Mbappe by offering Gareth Bale to United, but the Welshman decided against a move to Old Trafford.
As a result, United ended the summer without signing a new wide man to their ranks, although Mourinho will be content with how the early season has paved with his new recruits.
Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic have already made a significant contribution towards United’s perfect start to the new campaign, while Victor Lindelof is expected to be eased into the lineup – starting with a Champions League game against Basel this month.
