Talksport host Jason Cundy believes that if United don’t buy a centre-back and a centre forward then the best they can hope for is 3rd this season.
United have spent £77m this summer bringing in 2 central midfielders as well as a right back and a winger but having let both Falcao and Robin Van Persie leave, find themselves with just Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and James Wilson as recognised first team strikers.
Cundy argues that if the England striker is to get injured at some point, Hernandez and Wilson wouldn’t provide adequate cover:
Van Gaal has also said that he plans on making Rooney his main man up front. That’s not a problem, but the fact United lack cover for him is.
With just Javier Hernandez and James Wilson in reserve, Van Gaal is asking for trouble.
There has been talk of Pedro coming in, but can he lead the line if Rooney is out for an extended period? I’d say no.
Letting both RVP and Falcao go without replacing either is lunacy.
Speaking to Football Fanzone, the ex Chelsea defender then goes on to discuss United’s well documented defensive problems:
United’s defence is their weakpoint, last year without De Gea they would have been in a world of trouble and the fact that he could be on his way out of the club should have meant that Van Gaal tried even harder to tighten up his back line.
De Gea was easily the best keeper in England and perhaps Europe so if he was to leave and United fail to get in an established CB, it would be a disaster.
Van Gaal has spoken of playing Daley Blind at centre-back, indicating that United do have a defensive problem that needs solving. Last season we saw a lot of square pegs in round holes and you would have assumed that this would be rectified this season.
But United still find themselves in a position where, whilst improved, they need work. And if they are unable to fix these issues, then Cundy believes the best they can hope for is a 3rd place finish:
Of course they have seemingly solved problems in central midfield and at right back but without a centre-back and centre forward the best United can hope for this season is 3rd, not good enough if you consider the money Van Gaal has spent in his time at Old Trafford.
