Manchester United will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they face Tottenham Hotspur n Saturday’s kickoff from Old Trafford.
United have already suffered a draw and defeat to Liverpool and Huddersfield Town respectively this month, and this has seen them fall five points adrift of table-toppers Manchester City.
With a game against Chelsea in early November, Jose Mourinho will be desperate for three points against Spurs in order to maintain the club’s pursuit of the Premier League title.
David de Gea has been the preferred pick for the Premier League and Champions League outings, and he is assured of his place between the sticks. Mourinho is likely to want to match Tottenham in terms of the formation, and this could see Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling feature at the heart of the defence.
Antonio Valencia is a winger by trade, and this makes him the perfect fit for the right wing-back spot. Matteo Darmian provided a sublime assist for Jesse Lingard in midweek from Valencia’s position, but he could be swapped for a similar role in the other direction.
With Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini still on the sidelines, Ander Herrera is the immediate choice to feature alongside Nemanja Matic. The Spaniard sustained a minor ankle versus Swansea in the League Cup, but this may not restrict his appearance for the Spurs game.
Jesse Lingard scored both goals in the 2-0 triumph over Swansea in midweek, and he could potentially feature in an advanced attacking role alongside Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Marcus Rashford is no doubt the better pick ahead of Lingard, but the Englishman is currently struggling with a minor hamstring strain which could see him benched.
Romelu Lukaku has led the line with success this term, and he will be hoping to end his recent goalless streak in the Premier League. The Belgian has drawn blank in his recent outings against Liverpool and Leicester City.
