Spain international David de Gea has handed Manchester United a significant boost by ending the thought of joining Real Madrid in the near future.
The 27-year-old witnessed his deadline-day move to Los Blancos scuppered during the summer of 2015 and he has since been strongly linked with the European champions despite no approach being made.
According to The Manchester Evening News, De Gea has ‘ended thoughts’ of making the return to the Spanish capital, where he made a name for himself with Real’s arch-rivals Atletico Madrid.
As such, Los Blancos are now focusing on a move for Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and this probably ends any chance of De Gea parting ways with United for the next few years at the least.
Despite this, Jose Mourinho’s side have yet to reward the Spaniard with a new contract for his efforts but reports have previously suggested that it is only a formality before the keeper extends his stay.
Earlier in June, M.E.N reported that the Spaniard had verbally agreed on a fresh five-year bumper contract but so far, there has not been an official confirmation regarding a probable extension.
De Gea has missed the start of pre-season after his World Cup exploits for Spain but he is expected to report to report for club duty in the coming week alongside teammate Nemanja Matic.
