David de Gea makes stunning revelation on his early career

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has revealed that he could have been finding the net on the opposite end, had he not realised his potential between the sticks.

The 27-year-old had started his initial youth career playing as a striker or in goal, but he eventually stuck with the decision of donning the gloves – a position which has built his reputation.

“I played up front at school in Madrid, then at a soccer school there too,” De Gea told United Review. “I used to combine the two roles and play as a striker and then in goal. But, in the end, I realised I was a better keeper.”

De Gea was regarded as one of the hottest young prospects during his time at Atletico Madrid, and he has since transformed himself into a world-class shot-stopper at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard has made impressive saves for United time and time again, and the best of the lot came in the 0-0 draw versus Liverpool last month, where he instinctively stuck a left foot to thwart Joel Matip’s close-range effort.

De Gea has racked over 100 clean sheets for Manchester United since making his debut during the 2011-2012 season. He has been named in the PFA Team of the Year in four of the last six seasons.
