Other than perhaps Manchester City’s owners deciding to pull the plug on their investment, or maybe the media putting an embargo on the mention of Steven Gerrard’s birthday, one thing that would really cheer up United fans is our goalkeeper signing a new deal. The ongoing contract talks seem to have reached an impasse and part of the problem is apparently David De Gea’s buy-out clause. The Star reports:
Influential Mendes is due in Manchester this week, seeking a new £140,000-a-week contract for De Gea, 24.
That £7.28million-a-year deal would make De Gea the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.
The sticking point, though, is believed to be the buy-out clause, with United valuing their world-class keeper at £50m.
But Mendes, mindful of the fact that Real Madrid are eyeing De Gea, wants the release figure to be £35m.
It’s understandable that the Reds wouldn’t want to part with De Gea, for less than we paid for Juan Mata while despite having little time for him, I can also see why Mendes is keen to milk Real Madrid for as much money as possible should they make a move for his client.
