Delay in completing signings can hurt Manchester United

Erik ten Hag - Manchester United manager

Manchester United have been linked with a host of top players in the summer transfer window but as of now, they have only completed a single signing by capturing Dutch international, Tyrell Malacia, who featured in the opening pre-season fixture against Liverpool yesterday.

Delay in completing signings can hurt Manchester United just like the Vegas NFL odds will affect your betting. The Old Trafford outfit are interested in bringing in Christian Eriksen, Frenkie de Jong, Lisandro Martinez and Antony and they must be lured at the earliest to give Ten Hag ample time to fit them in the squad.

We take a look at the key departments.

Backline

Tyrell Malacia has arrived to strengthen the back line but I do not think that the Netherlands starlet will regularly start under Ten Hag. Shaw is expected to be our first choice left back and the new arrival from Feyenoord could replace Alex Telles, who has been linked with a move back to Porto.

We conceded goals for fun in the last Premier League campaign (57) and need a solid central defender, who can command the backline. Unfortunately, senior figures like Harry Maguire and Varane were average and in such a scenario, Lisandro Martinez must be signed swiftly.

Midfield

Man United have been interested Frenkie de Jong for a very long time. The transfer saga is into its 14th week, still, the signing has not been sealed.

We have already offloaded midfielders like Nemanja Matic and record signing, Paul Pogba for free this summer and have not replaced them as yet. Unbelievably, Fred was the last major signing that we secured to strengthen things in the center of the park and the Brazilian arrived in the summer of 2018.

Fred and McTominay are not good enough to win United the title and a world-class player like De Jong must be lured.

Attack

Christian Eriksen proved his worth in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and he was in top form for Brentford in the second half of the last campaign.

The Daish international was named in the PFA Team of the Year in the 2013-14 season and was a key member of the Spurs side that reached the Champions League final in 2019.

Reports have indicated that United have verbally agreed terms to sign the 30-year-old playmaker, who mainly features in the No. 10 role. Bruno Fernandes is irreplaceable in that position, so, I am not sure wy we are signing Eriksen.

Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard have left the club upon the expiry of their contracts. Martial’s future is up in the air, Greenwood is unavailable and the likes of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were average last season.

In such a scenario, the wide attacking positions must be strengthened and Brazilian star, Antony, who impressed under Ten Hag at Ajax, could be a top signing to reinforce the flanks.

Strike Force

Cavani has already left for free and veteran, Cristiano Ronaldo, is pushing to secure a move away from Old Trafford to play in the Champions League.

Ten Hag is adamant and claims that the Portugal captain is not for sale but in case he leaves, then a young center forward must be signed to replace him.

Erling Haaland snubbed us for Man City and Darwin Nunez turned us down to move to Liverpool. There are not many top out-and-out strikers available this summer. In my view, Man Utd should splash the cash to sign Nigerian international, Victor Osimhen, who was in top form for Italian Serie A side, Napoli, in the last campaign under the management of Luciano Spalletti.
