It is not yet January and it appears Manchester United have completed their first winter signing two months before the window officially opens. According to reports, 16 year old Millen Baars has joined Manchester United from Ajax. Well, not officially yet. The player may still need to pass a medical with the club but we all know 99% of them pass a medical any way. Reports claim Baars is leaving the Ajax squad in the summer due to a disagreement with coaching staff after captaining Ajax’s B1 side. Baars is a big boost to an already strong U18 side, and is the 3rd talent in recent years to come from Netherlands. He will join up with former Eredivisie players Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Tahith Chong.
One of the things many complained about when the news broke that Manchester United will emply Jose Mourinho was that the Portuguese hardly gives young players a chance with the first team. But exciting players such as Rashford and Lingard have benefited so much first team opportunities, and personally, I’d love to see Baars turn into another Depay, or Martial. From the little I have seen from the player, it seems like he really does have potential and should he continue to develop well will end up a gem for our team. However some time must be spent first in the U18 squad to continue his development.
Fellow Dutchman Timothy Fosu-Mensah has taken a similar path to that of Millen Baars. Fosu-Mensah is 18, former Ajax player, and now has 18 appearances for Manchester United since February. Baars is two years younger, but with much more potential.
