Depay’s choice of footballing hero is good news for Man United

Memphis Depay has spoken of his footballing hero growing up, and it bodes well for Man United in the long run.

The Dutch forward has shown glimpses of his ability in his spell at Old Trafford, but awaits his first competitive goal having scored during the pre-season win over MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.

The 21 year old was prolific last season, notching an impressive 28 goals last term and United fans will hope he can replicate his form in front of goal this season if they are to enjoy success.

Things are looking good for Depay though, especially with his choice of footballing idol.

Whilst doing a Facebook Q&A over the summer, the Holland international revealed that former Manchester United target Patrick Kluivert was his footballing idol as a kid, saying:

When I was five or six years old he was the one for me – he was scoring so many goals. I remember Ajax doing well in the European Cup and I was watching him score all these goals. He was my idol and I liked everything about him.

Depay will have worked with Kluivert last year in the run up to, and during the World Cup as the former Barcelona front man worked as assistant to United manager Louis Van Gaal.

With a big fee on his back, Depay is under heavy scrutiny at the moment, made worse by his miss against Aston Villa on Friday even but he will hope to channel his mentor as the season goes on, especially with United’s attack yet to impress.

And if he can, United fans will be in for an entertaining ride!
