Diego Simeone lined up as potential successor to Jose Mourinho: reports

Manchester United could reportedly pursue the services of Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, should Jose Mourinho be tempted to join Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

The Portuguese tactician has been touted as the number one target for Les Parisiens, who are likely to dismiss Unai Emery, should he fail to deliver a maiden Champions League crown this season.

According to Don Balon, United could make an approach for the Atleti head coach, if Les Parisiens come forward for Mourinho’s services in the summer.

The 54-year-old has just over 18 months left on his present contract, but United do have a 12-month extension clause which would keep him at Old Trafford until 2020 at least.

With United showing significant progress under Mourinho, talk over his exit doesn’t seem to come into place, although the Portuguese has rarely surpassed more than three seasons with a single club.

Nevertheless, with the option of an extension, Les Parisiens would have to pay a compensation fee of around £30m and this should keep United in a strong position to ward off any interest from the Capital outfit.

Manchester United are currently second in the Premier League standings, eight points behind Manchester City whom they face in the cross-town derby on Sunday.

Mourinho opted to go with a counter-attacking brand of football during the 3-1 triumph over Arsenal last weekend, and a similar tactic could be deployed versus the Citizens, who have scrapped through with late wins of late.
