Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has provided an early update on the central defensive partnership for the Everton game. The Red Devils utilised the services of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling in the Champions League outing against FC Basel in midweek with both Eric Bailly and Phil Jones serving their UEFA-imposed suspensions.
The duo of Bailly and Jones have featured in all four of United’s league games this campaign, and they have kept three clean sheets, barring the off-day at Stoke City last weekend where the scores ended 2-2. Speaking to reporters h/t The Express, Mourinho has hinted that he will ‘probably’ return to his first-choice pairing when the Red Devils entertain Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
“If you want to anticipate the next weekend I probably play Bailly and Jones because today they didn’t play, because they are fresh, because it makes sense for them to play again, but then two days after we have a League Cup match, so Victor and [Chris] Smalling again,” he said.
Manchester United have made a strong start to their league season with three wins and a draw, and Bailly and Jones have earned plaudits for their steely resolve at the back. Mark Hughes’ side gave a hard-time for the pair at the Bet365 Stadium last weekend, but they will hopefully come up with a solid performance versus the Toffees to maintain United’s slender advantage at the top.
