Man United: 27-year-old full-back Wanted by European Giants

European duo Barcelona and Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring the situation of Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian this summer. The Italy international was in and out of the first-team at Old Trafford last season, but he earned plaudits for his performances in the backend of the campaign including one in the Europa League final triumph over Ajax. Overall, the 27-year-old managed 29 appearances across all competitions for United while celebrating a Europa League and EFL Cup double.

According to Calciomercato, both Barcelona and Bayern are in the hunt for a new full-back and have already sounded out their interest to Darmian’s representative. However, the Italian is unlikely to push through an exit as he is prepared to fight for his position under Jose Mourinho, who in turn wants his current squad intact.

The former Torino man has started in different positions in pre-season including right-back and left wing-back, but his future looks to be in the latter with Mourinho likely to deploy a three-at-the-back formation next season. Both Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw are expected to miss the start of the new campaign through injury, and Darmain has the perfect chance to establish himself in the position ahead of the likes of Daley Blind and Jesse Lingard.
