Ex-Manchester United midfielder Johnny Giles believes that summer signing Nemanja Matic has a bigger influence at Old Trafford than superstar Paul Pogba.
Pogba joined Manchester United last season for a then world record fee of around £89million but despite the huge investment, the Frenchman failed to lead United to a decent finish in the league.
Manager Jose Mourinho then signed former Chelsea stalwart Nemanja Matic over the summer to get the best out of Pogba at the middle of the park this season and following the Serb’s arrival, the ex-Juventus man as well as United are currently performing much better than last term.
This has led many to state that Matic is arguably much more influential than Pogba in this United squad and one of those sharing this belief is former Manchester United midfielder Johnny Giles.
Giles said in a recent interview, “I never thought Pogba was a complete midfield player. Of course he is useful. But I don’t see him as the influence as lot a people do.
“Matic is far more influential. He won’t look as spectacular but for getting the job done in a professional manner, he is far more influential.”
While Matic has provided great defensive solidity to the current United squad, the Red Devils have missed Pogba immensely during the Frenchman’s recent injury layoff and both players are perhaps equally important to form a competitive Manchester United squad that can challenge leaders Manchester City for the Premier League title.
