Manchester United are reportedly planning to secure the signing of midfielder Fred by the end of next week. The Brazil international has been earmarked as United’s prime target to replace the retired Michael Carrick and a deal could be finalised before the midfielder heads for the summer World Cup.
According to The Manchester Evening News, United are keen on finalising the midfielder’s move when he makes the visit to the north-west with the Brazilian national team. The Selecao have an international friendly against Croatia scheduled to be played at Anfield on June 3, and United are hoping to complete his signing during this period.
Fred, who has been with Shakhtar Donetsk over the past five seasons, was initially touted for a move to Manchester City in January. However, the Citizens decided against signing the Brazilian after bolstering their central defence instead with Aymeric Laporte.
City have since dropped their pursuit of Fred and as per M.E.N, United could get a deal done for a reported fee of around £53m, which would trigger the release clause on his contract. Fred contributed four goals and seven assists during his recently concluded campaign with Shakhtar.
