Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho insists that the likes of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones should be worried over their first-team places owing to the potential of Victor Lindelof.
The Sweden international joined the Red Devils from Benfica for £35m during the summer, and he has since managed a solitary appearance against Real Madrid in the European Super Cup.
Lindelof looked short of pace during the game against Zinedine Zidane’s side and Mourinho has opted to keep him out of the field for the start of the Premier League season.
Prior to tonight’s Champions League clash against Basel, Mourinho admitted that Bailly and Jones should be worried about Lindelof, who has been working hard in training.
“Victor is a very good player with very good potential,” Mourinho told reporters h/t The Express. “And honestly, I think there are reasons for the other boys, Eric and Jones, to be worried.”
Lindelof is due to start in the Champions League clash against Basel tonight, and Mourinho has hinted that the Swede could thereafter feature in the Carabao Cup versus Burton Albion next week.
Both Jones and Bailly have performed efficiently during the first four games of the league season, but the failure to perform at a similar level in the future games, could encourage Lindelof’s chances of making his Premier League debut.
